The Haunted Room

Standard

Today was indeed a long long day for me . Reason , being a part of the crowd looking to book their seat in the hostel . Majority of the students reached the management block as early as 4 in the morning as no one was ready to take a chance . There are only 104 rooms available in the E block and students were more , causing a rush for the hostel allotment .

I , being a part of the crowd was sitting at the stairs for a long part of the morning . The whole environment was filled with the sound of chit – chats , buzz and occasional verbal outbursts from few desperate ones . But at 7’o clock , when the doors were being opened and the much enthusiastic students entered the block , there was a new sound to be heard . CRAASSHHHHH …….. The glass partition in the middle of the hall was unable to bear the pressure applied and thus , came down with a loud thud on the floor .

I have not seen such a rush in my life , not even during the counselling .The college management failed in handling the whole situation .It was panic everywhere . It was clear that its not worth being a part of the pulls and pushes and we would be better off coming back after some time .

Now comes the interesting part of the story . There is a room on the first floor ( E-231 ) hanutedwhere a student committed suicide a few years back . This room has not seen an inhabitant for many years . Last year , a guy dared to go for this room but eventually , he backed off after 2 months declaring that the room was haunted and the spirit in the room was not allowing him to live there peacefully . Now after that incident no one was ready to book that room .

12’o clock . After a lot of efforts , being thrown out a multiple number of times , being scolded by the Dean and warden a couple of times , initiating a number of quarrels among the students , finally we were able to enter the room where the allotment was under process . Slowly but surely the queue was moving . A number of dudes were entering the queue from the sidelines , decreasing the probability of the people behind them of being allotted a room . I kept watching .

1’o clock . Only 3 students between me and the window and after waiting for so long , I knew now it was just a matter of time .

10 minutes later , a declaration came from the warden , ” Room in the E block are full . Rest of the students are advised to go back now .”

After waiting for so long , a news like that was heart breaking for me . I was late and now it was not worth staying here . I mumbled in my mind ,” I should go back now and rethink on what to do now .” I just reached the doorsteps when a thought flashed into my mind ,” Have someone gone for E-231 .” I rushed back to check . It was still vacant .

Me : Sir , E-231 is still vacant . Please give me that room .

Warden looked at the cashier and both of them smiled .

Warden : Are you sure ? Do you know that ……….

Me : Sir , I know everything and I am not afraid of living there .

Warden : Ok then . Lets do it . Btw , whats your percentage ?

Me : its 79.2% aggregate right now . (thinking , what percentage got to do with that)

Warden : Excellent buddy . (Shaking hands)

Me : Sir , why did you ask me that ? Does the spirit give a consideration to the studious ones ?

Many student approached me with “Are you mad ? ” …….”You must be joking right” …… ” Do you even know the history of that room ?” …….”Just get the pooja done before entering the room and it will be ok ” ……. “Don’t worry , these are all rumours” ……. “Once again you got a double seater and now your room partner is a spirit.” …….. ” I will nominate your name for the bravey awards this time . ” …….

I made my way back to the hostel . The scorching heat of the sun was ineffective . The campus which was full of students appeared empty . All those things which were troubling me (internal viva , project submission , the LAN bug in my laptop ) were out of my mind . My clothes were soaked with sweat . My body was tired , both physically and mentally . My eyelids were shutting down due to the lack of sleep .There was one and only one thing I was thinking about .

“Me and My Haunted Room”

The Golgappa Competition

Standard

3 days back (in the hostel)

Cena (Abhinav) : Everyday when I am done with the coaching , I make my way to the Chaat Corner in the market and help myself with a plate of Golgappa .
Me : I just love Golgappas . I can eat as many as you bring in front of me .
Cena : Whatever amount it may be , you won’t be able to overtake me .
Me : Are you sure ?
Cena : Of course .
Me : Then why don’t we see it for ourself . Lets have a Golgappa Competition . Eat as many as you can . Losers to pay .
Cena : Done .

2 days back (on the way to gym)

Cena : By the way . Have you ever entered into such a competition earlier ?
Me : Yeah I have .
Cena : So ?
Me : So what ? I won . Isn’t that obvious ?
Cena : What was the number ?
Me : It took me 57 to win .
Cena (with a shocking look ) : I back off .
( I smiled . I knew he was an easy opponent )

A little later that day (in hostel)

Ashu : Harry . Why do you make so many cock and bull stories ?
Me : Which story ?
Ashu : You said you went upto 57 . That’s a white lie . When will you give up your habit of crafting stories ?
Me : If you don’t believe me , you can see it for yourself .
Ashu : Cena , don’t believe him . He is lying . You can easily defeat him . Go for it . If you lose , I will be your one-third financer .
Cena : Lets go for it then .
(At this point , I thanked Ashu for convincing Cena back to the competition)

Yesterday (in Sector 10 … our Kurukshetra)

Me : All set for competition ?
Cena : Absolutely .

Suddenly phone rang .
Abhi : Don’t start it . We are on our way . You have got an audience .

So the stage was set . Plates ready . Chaatwaala ready to fire Golgappas into our plates .
The count started . Comments and words of encouragements were coming out rapidly from the spectators ( Abhishek , Vivek , Raghav , Vibhuti , Ashu and Faraz) . The soldiers were standing steadily in the battlefield .

1…5….10….20…30….

No signs of giving up yet .  Audience was split into two corners , encouraging the contestants to live up to the situation . Counting was not to be stopped .

31…35…40….50….

Half Century . Excellent . Everyone thought that we will hit a century . But at this time , I started losing it . I knew its not long until I vomit it out .

51…55….56….57…..

I was a goner by this time . The magic number 57 strikes . I knew I won’t be able to hold it any further .

Vivek : Harry . Do you give up ?

I nodded . And the nod was followed by the vomiting . My stomach was unable to endure it . I lost the battle . Cena was celebrating . We shook hands and like a lost warrior , I made my way to the stairs of the nearest shop and helplessly , I kept looking at my friends having their own share of Golgappas . ( Hoping that atleast they would eat like Homo Sapiens . Afterall , it was loser to pay )

Cena : I never thought I could eat so much . No matter . Well tried .
Me : Yeah Yeah . Well tried indeed . Now give me the bill . (making my way to my wallet , pondering over the bill)

Boyz Night Out

Standard

Our college’s annual inter-college technical fest Jagriti ended yesterday . The three days of Jagriti were really awesome and we enjoyed it to the brim ( Afterall a break from studies is always welcomed by us ) . Now what ? Back to studies ? Obviously , semesters are approaching . But before going back to the same old routine , we decided to celebrate the last study-free days in our own way . Someone coined an idea of invading the roads of Delhi right through the night , until Sun appears to end the party . Everyone agreed and slowly but surely , after a few arrangements , we had nine bikes and twenty engineers ready to take off .

Warden allowed us to leave the campus on the condition that we won’t return until the broad daylight . We were not in much of a hurry anyway . First thing first , it was made sure that petrol tank of all the bikes were more than filled with the fuel . But the things didn’t went exactly as planned . A puncture in the back tyre of one of the bikes ( and that too , twice :( ) delayed our caravan by one hour . As a result , we wereIndia Gate not able to enter New Delhi until 1’0 clock . But as they say , better late than never . Once in the capital , we were flying towards our first and foremost destination . No points for guessing . India Gate .

No doubt India Gate is a wonderful piece of architecture . Its beautiful . You could actually look at it continously for a day or two and still want to have a better look at the masterpiece . While we were parking our bikes , we were surprised to see a noticeable number of people gathered near India Gate , this late at night ( or should I say , early in the morning) . Guess what !!! On our way towards India Gate , we heard someone shout “Lights…Camera…Action” . There was a shooting in progress . It was Pankaj Kapoor shooting for his upcoming movie “Office Office” . Never ever a trip to India Gate was so exciting . A salute for India gateSoon enough , after the pack up , it was time for us to click a pose . Snaps for every possible angle were captured and after admiring India Gate for some time , we were back to the roads of the capital .

Our next spot was the famous Gurudwara at Bangla Sahib . After washing my hands and feet , when I entered the place , I was spellbound to see how beautiful the Gurudwaara looked amidst the lake . I have never been to a Gurudwara before . So obviously , it was a moment to remember for me . We stayed there for about an hour . It was so relaxing and a lovely feeling staying there . All the headache which was caused by the numerous mishappenings caused at the Sky Fest had gone by now .

On the roads again . We took care to avoid any police car patrolling the roads . Many of the guys didn’t had the license + many bikes had papers missing + few bikes without the rear view mirror + three bikes were enjoying tripling + few of us were without helmet as well . Enough reasons for the cops to gift us fine . But lucky we were , as we did not experience any such misfortune . Making our way from the Red Fort to Rajghaat , Feroz Shah Kotla to Cannaught Palace , finally we were back in hostel at around 6 A.M.

Last night was one to remember . Riding on the empty roads of Delhi , with the peers , all night long was an experience of lifetime .
